People with extreme circulatory problems have typically been considered “no-option” patients, destined to lose their foot or leg. Dr. Sanjeev Pradhan, a vascular surgeon of Vein & Vascular Experts, performed a procedure called LimFlow that gives these patients hope.
Dr. Pradhan is the first physician to perform this procedure in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago. He first learned of the procedure while training in Europe in 2008. LimFlow, an endovascular peripheral deep vein arterialization procedure, was FDA approved in 2023. Because of the technical expertise required to perform this procedure, few surgeons use it. However, Dr. Pradhan feels strongly that this procedure can be a game-changer when it comes to saving limbs.
LimFlow is a minimally invasive technique that can help people with the extreme form of peripheral artery disease called chronic limb-threatening ischemia, or CLTI, by bypassing the blocked artery in the leg turning veins of the foot into arteries to deliver increased amounts of blood and oxygen.
With peripheral artery disease or PAD, plaque accumulates on the inner surface of the arteries that leads to blockages of the leg arteries. This process reduces circulation to the legs and feet causing severe pain and gangrene.
Until now, patients with severe CLTI only had the option of undergoing an angiogram with stenting or bypass surgery. If these procedures failed, patients were destined for leg amputation. But now, Dr. Pradhan can evaluate the patient to see if they are a candidate for the LimFlow procedure. And, although not always successful, LimFlow offers one more chance at patients keeping their legs…in other words, it offers patients previously deemed with having “no-option” an alternative–hope. Hope that they can keep their legs, hope that their pain will get better, hope that they will be able to continue walking and be independent.
